Eyes from the sky this Saturday/ A giant asteroid will pass near Earth,

A large asteroid will pass close to Earth this Saturday, posing no risk of collision with our planet, the European Space Agency (ESA) announced today.

According to ESA experts, the passage of such an object near Earth only happens once every few years. However, its observation may be difficult due to the strong illumination of the Moon, which will be very bright at the moment of maximum approach of the asteroid.

The asteroid, known as (152637) 1997 NC1, was discovered in 1997. Current estimates put it at between 750 and 1,650 meters in diameter, although its exact size remains unclear due to variations in calculations of the Sun's light reflectance (albedo).

The asteroid will travel at a speed of 8.9 kilometers per second. At that point, it will be about 2.56 million kilometers from Earth, or about 6.66 times the distance between Earth and the Moon, which completely eliminates the possibility of a collision.

According to ESA, the object will be visible from various parts of the northern hemisphere during its approach, while at the moment of closest approach it will be observable from almost the entire world. In areas where it will be night, it can theoretically be seen with small telescopes or even powerful binoculars.

Astronomers consider this a rare opportunity for sky lovers to closely observe such a large asteroid passing close to Earth. /CNA
