Congress approves war powers measure for the first time/ Urges Trump to halt

The US Senate, controlled by Republicans, has approved by 50 votes to 48 a resolution that urges US President Donald Trump to halt military operations against Iran or seek Congressional approval for their continuation.

Several Republican senators joined Democrats in voting, while the same measure had been approved earlier by the US House of Representatives.

However, the resolution is largely symbolic, as it will not be sent to the president for signature and has no binding legal force. It expresses the political position of Congress, but does not force the administration to change its course.

President Trump reacted sharply after the vote, calling the resolution “inappropriate and senseless.” In a post on his platform, he said that senators have made his job harder, but that he will achieve his objectives “one way or another.”

Analysts say the vote reflects the American public's discontent with the conflict with Iran, especially after the rise in fuel prices. Middle East expert Laura Blumenfeld described the resolution as "more of a slap on the wrist than a handcuff," underscoring its lack of legal effect.

Four Republican senators – Rand Paul, Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins and Bill Cassidy – voted in favor of the resolution alongside Democrats. While Democrat John Fetterman was the only one from his party to vote against it.

The Trump administration argues that the ceasefire reached with Iran on April 7 has ended hostilities and that there is no longer an active conflict from which US forces should withdraw. The US and Iran are currently working on a broader agreement aimed at ending Iran's nuclear program, following a memorandum of understanding signed last week.

The Senate vote is considered an important political signal and an indicator of divisions within the Republican Party as the country approaches the November midterm elections. /CNA
