Experts: Extreme heat wave in Europe not directly linked to El Niño

Western Europe is facing a severe heat wave, with temperatures in some areas exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, while experts emphasize that the phenomenon is not caused by El Niño, but by long-term climate warming.

In France, authorities have put more than half of the continental departments on red alert due to extreme temperatures. The country is also experiencing tropical nights, with temperatures not falling below 20 degrees Celsius. Several heat-related deaths have been reported in recent days, including two young children found dead in a vehicle in southeastern France.

The United Kingdom has also issued extreme heat warnings, with temperatures expected to reach 39 degrees Celsius. In Germany, high temperatures have increased the risk of forest fires, especially in the southern and eastern regions.

Although the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has confirmed the development of El Niño conditions in the Pacific Ocean, experts say its impact on the summer heatwaves in Europe is limited. Meteorologist Ioanna Vergini points out that the current heatwave is the result of an atmospheric phenomenon known as a “heat dome”, amplified by record temperatures caused by climate change.

According to scientists, El Niño can temporarily increase global temperatures, but its impact is much smaller compared to global warming caused by human activity. Europe is warming more than twice as fast as the global average, making the continent increasingly exposed to dangerous heat waves.

Experts warn that phenomena like El Niño are temporary, while climate change continues to influence long-term increases in temperatures and the increase in extreme weather events around the world.
