"Qatargate" scandal/ Belgium issues arrest warrant for former EU

Belgian authorities have issued a European arrest warrant for former EU Commissioner for Migration and current Greek MP, Dimitris Avramopoulos, as part of investigations into the corruption scandal known as "Qatargate".

Avramopoulos is suspected of involvement in a criminal organization linked to the illegal influence network at the center of the investigation. Prosecutors are examining payments worth about 73,000 euros that he received from the non-governmental organization "Fight Impunity", founded by Antonio Panzeri, one of the main figures in the case.

The "Qatargate" investigation began in 2022, following allegations that Qatar, along with Mauritania and Morocco, attempted to influence European politicians through money and gifts.

Among those involved in the investigation are former European Parliament vice-president Eva Kaili and her partner, Francesco Giorgi. According to Greek officials, Belgian prosecutors had asked Avramopoulos to testify last year, but he did not appear.

The former commissioner denies all charges. He stated that his activity with "Fight Impunity" was completely legal, transparent and approved by the competent authorities.

He also said that he will not rely on parliamentary immunity and demands that the matter be investigated to the end. For the execution of the arrest warrant, the Greek Parliament must first vote to lift his parliamentary immunity. /CNA
