Election losses/Starmer resigns

Keir Starmer resigns as Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party.

"I will resign as leader of the Labour Party," Starmer declared outside 10 Downing Street.

In recent days, Starmer has been analysing the political situation and the growing pressure within the Labour Party. This comes after the return to Parliament of Andy Burnham, who is now considered the leading candidate to take over the leadership of the party and the government.

Pressure on Starmer has increased following Labour Party losses in local elections and Burnham's success in the Makerfield by-election, where he defeated the Reform UK candidate led by Nigel Farage.

There is debate within the Labour Party about how the transition of power should be carried out. Some MPs want Burnham to take over without an internal contest, while others insist on holding a leadership election.
