France bans alcohol at music festival due to extreme heat

French authorities have taken a rare decision to ban the consumption of alcohol in public places and during events at the annual Fete de la Musique festival, as a result of an unusual and devastating heatwave that has gripped the country.

Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu's office has ordered that all events organized by the state and its agencies not serve alcohol. The decision comes as part of efforts to protect the health system and ease the work of medical personnel by reducing emergencies that can be caused by the combination of alcohol and high temperatures.

Météo-France has put 35 French departments on red alert, the highest possible level. Temperatures are expected to reach 41°C in some areas, while national averages could reach historic highs for this time of year.

This heat wave, which has been going on for several days, has caused significant disruption to daily life, forcing the cancellation of dozens of train lines and the suspension of classes in many schools.

In Paris, authorities have kept public parks and gardens open all night to offer residents and tourists a cooler space. The Fête de la Musique, which is held every year on the summer solstice, usually draws millions of people to the streets of French cities, but this year the celebrations have been severely affected by extreme weather.

Authorities have urged citizens to exercise maximum caution, avoid strenuous physical activity, and stay hydrated, stressing that this is a period of high risk for public health, especially for the most vulnerable. Experts warn that the situation remains uncertain for the coming days. /CNA
