Poland strips Zelensky of highest state decoration/ Tensions between the two

Polish President Karol Nawrocki announced on Friday that he has decided to strip Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of the country's highest decoration, the Order of the White Eagle.

The decision comes amid tensions between Poland and Ukraine over the interpretation of shared historical events.

Reactions in Warsaw increased after Zelensky decided to give a Ukrainian military unit the name of the Ukrainian nationalist organization Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), which is associated with massacres of Poles during World War II.

The removal of the decoration is considered an action with strong political symbolism and could negatively affect bilateral relations.

Poland has been among Ukraine's strongest supporters, providing military and humanitarian aid since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha immediately reacted to the decision, calling it a "strategic mistake" on Warsaw's part.

According to him, revoking the decoration from Zelensky constitutes a sign of "disrespect" towards Kiev and could harm cooperation between the two countries.

This case shows that, despite the close alliance between Poland and Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression, historical disputes continue to remain a source of tension in relations between the two states. /CNA
