From iconic monuments to world-famous theme parks, some attractions promise unforgettable experiences, but not always for the right reasons.

A new study, which analyzed nearly 100,000 visitor reviews, has revealed the tourist attractions most likely to leave travelers disappointed. For the second year in a row, a popular British destination has topped the list.

Complaints about crowds, unreasonable prices and experiences that fall short of expectations have led to some of the world's most recognizable names receiving negative reviews.

According to the Radical Storage study, the most disappointing place turns out to be Alton Towers in England, followed by the Georgia Aquarium and Horseshoe Casino, both in the United States.

How was the ranking compiled?

Starting from a list of 5,832 tourist attractions in 50 of the world's most visited countries, based on reports from EuroMonitor and Mastercard, Radical Storage researchers narrowed the selection by excluding attractions that had fewer than 2,000 reviews from visitors.

Attractions in Russia, Ukraine and Israel were excluded from the study due to ongoing conflicts. After this filtering, experts analyzed 99,547 visitor reviews.

To create the rankings, the team used 90 keywords that appeared most frequently in visitor descriptions. They excluded potentially misleading terms, such as “not disappointing,” and focused on terms like “boring” and “unreachable.” They then calculated the percentage of negative reviews for each attraction.

On average, 5.2% of reviews for the attractions studied were negative, but some destinations had significantly higher percentages.

The study also found that the UK and Canada are the countries with the highest percentage of disappointing attractions (7.9%), followed by the United States (7.5%).

Among the cities, the most disappointing were Seattle (8.9%), Budapest (6.3%), London and Bangkok (6% each). Also, six of the ten most disappointing attractions in the world are located in North America.
