Fires and extreme heat keep France and Spain on alert

Firefighters in France and Spain continue efforts to bring under control massive forest fires that have forced tens of thousands of people to flee their homes.

Both countries are also preparing for a new heat wave that is expected to worsen the situation from Wednesday.

In France, firefighters managed to contain the spread of a fire near the city of Bordeaux overnight.

In Spain, authorities allowed residents of nine of the 11 evacuated towns in the province of Toledo to return to their homes.

However, fires continue to burn out of control in the Madrid region and in the neighboring provinces of Avila and Toledo.

A resident evacuated from wildfires in Spain described the situation as "a red hell," saying people left in a hurry, taking only the clothes they were wearing with them, Reuters reports.

French President Emmanuel Macron said the country is facing its worst forest fire situation since World War II.

"We are facing a completely unprecedented forest fire," he said during a visit to emergency teams near Bordeaux.

According to French authorities, more forest areas have burned so far this year than in the same period of any year since 2006.

French and Spanish authorities warn that high temperatures in the coming days could make fighting the fires even more difficult.

In France, camps and tourist complexes in the coastal area near Bordeaux are being evacuated.

In Spain, the country is preparing for its fourth heat wave this summer.

High temperatures, strong winds and low humidity are expected to significantly increase the risk of fires.

According to Spanish authorities, more than 73,000 people have been evacuated, while around 66,000 others have been ordered to stay indoors due to the risk of fires.

Meteorologists predict the heat wave will peak on Wednesday.

Temperatures in Paris can reach up to 38 degrees Celsius, while in the Madrid region up to 37 degrees.

Scientists say that climate change, caused by human activity, is making heat waves more frequent and intense, creating conditions that favor the spread of forest fires.
