The Pentagon revised its official casualty count from the war with Iran, updating the number of American soldiers killed and wounded during the conflict.
According to the latest figures from the US Department of Defense, 14 members of the US armed forces have been killed and over 400 have been injured.
However, the Pentagon has changed these figures several times in recent weeks, prompting criticism of how combat injuries are classified and reported.
The issue has also attracted attention because the Department of Defense has provided little public information about the conflict.
In an interview with The Guardian newspaper, former US Secretary of Defense and former CIA director Leon Panetta criticized the way the Pentagon has reported on casualties, accusing the administration of not giving the public a full picture of the human cost of the war.
Panetta said there had been "a deliberate attempt... to hide information from the American citizen," calling it "a shameful approach" to informing the public about the consequences of the war.
Last week, the Pentagon announced that about 100 US service members had been injured in Iranian retaliatory attacks following the ceasefire.
According to him, about 96 percent of them returned to duty after outpatient treatment and, for this reason, were not officially classified as wounded according to Pentagon reporting criteria.
The Department of Defense says it continues to review the casualty toll as additional medical assessments are completed.
The war between the United States, backed by Israel, and Iran began in late February, after Washington and Tel Aviv launched attacks on Iranian targets, with the stated aim of hindering Tehran's nuclear program.
The conflict was accompanied by mutual attacks in the region and threats to maritime traffic in the Persian Gulf.
After a brief ceasefire, fighting resumed in early July, as both sides accused each other of violating the agreement./REL
