Iran says it has stopped attacks on Washington allies as US suspends bombing

Tehran said it had halted retaliatory attacks against US allies in the Middle East, as Washington refrained from attacking Iran for the second night in a row.

Meanwhile, a senior military official in Tehran threatened that Iran could expand its attacks across the region, hinting that Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen could intensify attacks on ships sailing in the Red Sea.

The calm on the night of July 26 came just two days before a key meeting scheduled in Washington between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The July 28 visit coincides exactly with the five-month anniversary of the launch of a broad campaign of airstrikes against Iranian targets by American and Israeli forces.

Iran has responded by attacking US allies in the Middle East and has virtually closed the Strait of Hormuz, the strategic sea route through which a large amount of oil and gas normally passes to world markets.

In recent weeks, Washington declared a partial ceasefire, although before July 24 it had carried out incessant bombing of Iranian targets for almost two weeks.

According to The New York Times, the temporary halt in US strikes was prompted in part by the dwindling US stockpile of interceptor missiles, used to shoot down Iranian missiles, which has caused concern among US military planners.

Vice President JD Vance and General Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, expressed concerns about the escalation of the conflict during a meeting at the White House, CNN reported.

The Pentagon, however, has insisted that its forces remain well-equipped. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell told CNN that "the US military has a vast arsenal of capabilities."

An Iranian military spokesman warned on July 26 that the war would expand even further if the US decided to resume attacks.

"The attacks continued until two nights ago, but during the last two nights the Americans have stopped their attacks," Iranian military spokesman Mohammad Akraminia was quoted as saying, according to the semi-official Mehr news agency.

"Since our strategy has been retaliatory, we have also suspended our retaliatory operations," he said.

Speaking at the White House on July 26, Trump said he had not yet decided whether to return to a full military campaign. He also said Iran faces a choice between reaching a deal or facing attacks “at a much higher level.”

In addition to concerns about the US arms stockpile, growing discontent among American voters could also affect the White House's plans for war. Polls show that war with Iran is widely unpopular, and it could become a major issue for Trump's Republican Party in the upcoming US congressional elections in November.

Houthi rebels in Yemen said they had shot down a drone launched by US ally Saudi Arabia, the latest in a series of clashes that have raised fears that the conflict with Iran could widen further in the region.

In recent days, Yemeni rebels also claimed to have carried out attacks on Saudi oil facilities.

The Iranian military stopped six ships trying to pass through the Strait of Hormuz over the past 24 hours, Iranian state television reported on July 26.

Tehran said it had made progress in talks with Oman - which borders the narrowest part of the strait - on "common principles and operational mechanisms" for maritime transport.

Oman and Iran said they would discuss imposing tariffs on shipping services, a move that Washington opposes./REL
