Romania shoots down third drone in three days, Bucharest accuses Russia of

The Romanian Air Force has shot down another drone that had entered the country's airspace, bringing to three the number of unmanned aerial vehicles neutralized in just three days.

Romania's President, Nicu?or Dan, announced that an F-16 fighter jet intercepted and shot down the drone on Sunday at around 10:13 a.m. over Romanian territorial waters, in the Sulina–Chilia area of ??the Danube Delta, near the border with Ukraine.

"I want to congratulate the Romanian pilots and ground crews for the professionalism, courage and efficiency with which they carry out their missions," President Dan wrote on the social network X.

Another drone crashed on Saturday about 10 kilometers west of the village of Sfântu Gheorghe, in eastern Romania. According to the Defense Ministry, two F-16 jets scrambled to identify the target and neutralized it safely in an uninhabited area near the border.

The first drone was shot down on Friday, with Romanian authorities saying investigations by the Prosecutor General's Office confirmed it was a Shahed drone, used by Russia in the war against Ukraine. Investigations into the drones shot down on Saturday and Sunday are still ongoing.

President Dan described the continued violation of Romanian airspace by the Russian Federation as unacceptable, emphasizing that Bucharest is treating these incidents with maximum seriousness in coordination with NATO allies.

Romania, which is located on the eastern flank of the Alliance and borders Ukraine along the Black Sea and the Danube Delta, has faced an increase in drone-related incidents since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

There have been several similar incidents in recent months. In May, a Russian drone carrying explosives crashed into a block of flats in Gala?i, causing a fire and injuring two people. In June, a Ukrainian naval drone exploded in the port of Constanta after, according to the Ukrainian military, it went off course due to Russian electronic warfare interference.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has described these incidents as a direct consequence of Russia's war against Ukraine./ CNA
