Over 220,000 people evacuated in France and Spain due to wildfires

More than 220,000 people have been evacuated in France and Spain due to large, rapidly spreading wildfires, fueled by high temperatures, drought and strong winds.

In France, about 200,000 people have fled their homes in the Gironde and Landes regions. Near Bordeaux alone, authorities ordered the evacuation of nearly 60,000 people, while the flames have engulfed over 19,000 hectares of forest and destroyed about 80 homes. President Emmanuel Macron has mobilized the army and asked for support from the European Union to deal with the situation.

Meanwhile, in Spain, a large fire near Madrid has been declared by authorities as out of control by firefighters. The government has declared a national state of emergency, while about 25,000 people have been evacuated and nearly 40,000 others have been instructed to stay indoors. So far, the flames have burned thousands of hectares of land in the regions of Madrid and Ávila.

Spanish authorities are investigating the causes of one of the fires, while a person has been arrested on suspicion that the fire may have been caused by negligence while using heavy machinery.

The European Union has sent planes and helicopters to help put out the fires, as experts warn that heatwaves and climate change are significantly increasing the risk of fires in southern Europe./ CNA
