From January, most bus tickets in England will be capped at £2

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced that most bus fares in England will be capped at £2 from January.

A cap on bus fares was first introduced in 2023 - initially at £2, before rising to £3 in 2025.

Burnham said: Lower fares will help people get where they need to go - giving them room to afford the cost of living.

The measure is backed by £454 million in funding including money that allows devolved governments to take similar action.

This amount will come from the conversion of investments in international climate finance into loans. The rest will come from the budget of the Department for Energy Security and Zero Energy Equipment.

The announcement on bus ticket prices comes after the reduction of VAT on household electricity bills, from 5% to 0%./ CNA
