A Moroccan citizen lost his life during police arrest/ Protests erupt in Italy

Clashes between police and protesters have erupted in the Italian city of Bologna after a 42-year-old man of Moroccan origin died during a police stop.

Abderrahim Fakir, who had lived in Italy since the age of five and ran a small business, died on Sunday while being held down by two police officers.

Videos published in Italian media show Fakir repeatedly shouting "Aiuto, aiuto, basta" ("Help, help, enough"), while two police officers hold him still. The prosecutor's office has launched an investigation into the case and has requested the seizure of footage from the officers' body cameras to shed light on the circumstances of the incident.

His death has sparked strong reactions in Italy. Human rights organizations and opposition parties have called for a full investigation and transparency into police actions.

During Monday night's protest, demonstrators set off fireworks near police buildings, while law enforcement used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd.

The case has been compared in Italy to the killing of George Floyd in the United States, while some opposition politicians have also linked the event to the methods used by US immigration authorities (ICE).

Investigations into the death of Abderrahim Fakir continue, while the results of the forensic examination and the analysis of footage from police body cameras are awaited. /CNA
