Saudi Arabia and Houthis exchange fire / US attacks tanker in Strait of Hormuz

Saudi Arabia launched airstrikes on Houthi rebel targets in Yemen's port city of Hodeidah and a nearby island after the Iran-backed group announced a naval blockade and attacked Saudi ships.

Saudi authorities later issued emergency alerts for Jizan province after Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for a missile attack on the city of Jizan.

Early Saturday, the media outlet of the Houthi rebels' Ansarullah movement said on Telegram that a "missile attack from Yemen" had caused fires in the Saudi city of Jizan.

Meanwhile, in the Strait of Hormuz, the US military said on Friday it had shot down and disabled a tanker in the Gulf of Oman that was trying to evade a US blockade of Iranian ports.

The ship attacked by the US is the second merchant ship the US has blocked since it reimposed the blockade earlier this month.

"We disabled the tanker after the crew attempted to breach the blockade at least four times previously," Navy Captain Tim Hawkins, spokesman for US Central Command, told AFP.

"The crew was repeatedly warned, disobeyed the order, and US forces on the scene disabled the ship after firing into its engine room," he said. "The ship is no longer transiting to Iran."

Earlier, a delegation from Oman arrived in the Iranian capital, Tehran, for talks on the Strait of Hormuz, Iran's state news agency IRNA reported. Oman controls the southern coastline of the strait.

The US and Iran have been exchanging fire for nearly two weeks, with Iran saying on Friday it had carried out drone attacks on US military facilities and bases across the Middle East in retaliation for the 13th consecutive night of US attacks on the country./ CNA
