Burnham ready to criticize Trump for UK national interest

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has stated that he will not hesitate to criticize US President Donald Trump if it is in the interests of Great Britain.

In his first major interview as prime minister with the BBC, Burnham said he had had a positive first conversation with Trump, whom he described as "very warm."

However, he avoided saying whether he trusts the American president, emphasizing that international relations should be evaluated according to developments.

"I can't say I will never have an opinion different from Donald Trump's. If it's right for Britain, I will express it without hesitation," Burnham said.

Asked if he would publicly criticize Trump, the prime minister responded that protecting the national interest should always be a priority.

"You have to protect your national interest above all else. That is the duty of a prime minister," he said.

Burnham also expressed his concern about the way the US president initiated the conflict with Iran, stressing that he would not hesitate to express his positions when he deems it necessary.

Regarding defense, Burnham did not give a concrete deadline for increasing military spending to 3% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), but stressed that the government will work to secure funding for this target ahead of the next budget.

The prime minister also ruled out the possibility of early general elections, stating that his government intends to focus on governing and getting the country back on track until the elections scheduled for 2029./ CNA
