Wildfires sweep across France and Spain, forcing over 300,000 people to evacuate

Over 300,000 people have been evacuated from France and Spain, as the massive fires that have engulfed the two countries continue to spread rapidly, fueled by extreme temperatures and strong winds.

The most critical situation is in southwest France, where the flames are approaching the city of Bordeaux. According to authorities, about 250,000 residents have fled their homes in the Gironde and Landes regions, while firefighters warn that the fires remain out of control.

President Emmanuel Macron has mobilized the army to help with firefighting operations and activated the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism. France will be supported by firefighting aircraft and emergency teams sent by several EU member states.

Spain is also facing a serious situation. About 60,000 people have been evacuated from the Madrid and Ávila regions, while over 28,000 others remain isolated in their homes. Authorities have also confirmed the first victim, a man in his 70s, who died in a fire near Valencia.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez acknowledged that difficult days lie ahead for the country, noting that so far this year fires have burned around 130,000 hectares of land in Spain. In France, according to the Interior Ministry, the flames have destroyed around 98,000 hectares since the beginning of the year.

Meanwhile, fires have also affected other European countries. Hundreds of active fires have been recorded in Sicily, while in Scotland, the battle continues with a large fire in the Cairngorms National Park.

The European Commission warns that Europe could face its worst fire season in years, as heatwaves are expected to continue in the coming weeks./ CNA
