Iran executes two more men in connection with January protests

Iranian state media reports that Abolfazl Sepahi Badjani and Amirhossein Safari Hosseinabadi have been executed, due to their alleged role in the January 2026 protests, in the Malek Shahr neighborhood of Isfahan.

Iranian authorities accused them of killing four police officers in Alikhani Square during the January 8 protests, after first injuring and then burning them.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty was unable to independently verify how the trial unfolded, whether the defendants had access to lawyers, and under what circumstances their confessions were obtained.

Videos posted on social media appear to show hundreds of people gathered near the execution site to protest against the hangings, under tight security.

In some videos, protesters can be heard chanting "No honor! No honor!", while the morning call to prayer can be heard in the background.

Security forces are seen moving through the crowd on motorcycles.

Social media users also report clashes between protesters and security forces, as well as internet outages in Isfahan.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty has not been able to independently verify these reports either.

The executions were carried out in the early hours of July 28, just hours after Mai Sato, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in Iran, announced that a group of UN experts had called on Tehran to immediately halt the execution of 10 other defendants in the same case in Isfahan.

Twelve protesters, who were in their late teens or early twenties when they were arrested, were sentenced to death in a joint trial, held behind closed doors.

Two other convicts, Gol Mohammad Mohammadi and Erfan Esfandiari, were executed on July 19.

UN experts have said the trial did not meet standards for a fair trial.

According to them, the guilty verdicts were based on forced confessions, broadcast by state television, and the individual responsibility of each defendant was not clearly established.

The Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) and the Iranian Association for Human Rights announced that prisoners in Unit 2 of Qezel Hesar Prison, in Karaj, continued their hunger strike and sit-in protest for the fifteenth consecutive day on July 27, in protest against the executions and the transfer of prisoners to solitary confinement.

According to these organizations, hundreds of death row prisoners have been refusing prison food since July 13.

Judicial authorities and prison administrations in Iran have not commented on these reports./REL
