Kim Jong Un: North Korea will equip its navy with nuclear weapons

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has stated that the country's armed forces are continuing with a program to equip the Navy with nuclear weapons and that it aims to build warships.

The statement was made during the commissioning ceremony of the warship Choe Hyon in the port city of Nampo, according to the state news agency KCNA.

Kim Jong Un stressed that the Navy's nuclear armament program is "progressing according to plan" and that this is a strategic objective to guarantee the readiness of the state's nuclear force for various military operations.

According to North Korean authorities, the Choe Hyon is equipped with the country's most advanced weapons. In April, Kim also oversaw a test launch of a cruise missile from the ship.

Plan for larger ships

Kim announced that after Choe Hyon, the destroyer Kang Kon will also be put into service. After that, North Korea aims to regularly build strategic ships of 10,000 tons.

According to him, the country plans to build two surface combatants larger than the Choe Hyon each year, with at least one of them being a 10,000-ton class.

Experts believe that this milestone has symbolic significance for Pyongyang, as it would show its ambition not to lag behind South Korea's naval power.

Tensions in the region

Kim declared that the era of the North Korean Navy's only coastal defense role was over. He also vowed to further strengthen the country's military capabilities, arguing that military modernization by South Korea and the United States was pushing the region toward the risk of nuclear conflict.

North Korea has declared itself a nuclear weapons state for years, and nuclear disarmament negotiations have remained deadlocked since the failure of the 2019 summit between Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, North and South Korea remain technically at war, as the 1950-1953 conflict ended with an armistice rather than a peace treaty. They are separated by a demilitarized zone along their border. /CNA
