The largest program in the history of the local navy / Germany may abandon the 6 frigate project

Germany is planning to cancel the construction of six F126-type frigates, a multi-billion euro project that would be the largest program in the history of the German navy.

The news was reported by the German magazine Der Spiegel and the British newspaper Financial Times.

According to reports, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius intends to purchase eight smaller MEKO A-200 frigates from ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS).

The decision could be a blow to Rheinmetall, which was expected to take over the F126 project from Dutch shipbuilder Damen Group during the second quarter of the year.

Reports say the change is also supported by German naval leaders. The MEKO A-200 frigates are about 120 meters long, significantly smaller than the F126 frigates, which reach 166 meters.

The F126 project has long faced problems and delays, which seems to have influenced the revision of Berlin's plans for the modernization of the naval fleet. /CNA
