IAEA chief: Inspectors will visit Iranian nuclear facilities

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, has announced that inspectors will visit Iranian nuclear facilities as part of the interim agreement signed by Washington and Tehran.

The statement from the head of the UN nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, came a day after the US and Iran reacted angrily to whether such sites would be inspected.

"I can understand the political statements, they are part of reality, but the fundamental thing I want to remind you and draw your attention to is that there was a Memorandum of Understanding, signed by both presidents ," Grossi told reporters at a press conference.

He added that the agreement clearly states that nuclear activities to be carried out in connection with nuclear material facilities will be supervised by the IAEA.

"Of course, to do this, we will need to inspect. Whether this happens the day after tomorrow, in a week or in 10 days, it is important, but not essential. This will happen," he added.

The IAEA has been blocked by Tehran from visiting Iranian uranium enrichment sites. According to experts, Iran is believed to have enough enriched uranium to build up to 10 nuclear weapons.

It is the only country in the world with uranium enriched to 60% purity without a weapons program. Meanwhile, Tehran has long maintained that its program is for civilian use only. /CNA
