Powerful earthquake strikes Greece

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 on the Richter scale was recorded this morning near the island of Karpathos.

According to preliminary data from the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, the epicenter was located about 7 kilometers south-southwest of Karpathos, while the focal depth was estimated at about 10 kilometers.

The tremors were felt across Karpathos, as well as the neighboring Dodecanese islands, including Kasos, parts of Crete and as far as the eastern areas of Rhodes. Local authorities have announced that there are no reports of casualties or material damage so far.

The region that includes Crete, Kasos, Karpathos and Rhodes is located in the eastern part of the Hellenic Arc, one of the most active seismic zones in Europe and the Mediterranean. /CNA
