Communication system problem causes two-hour disruption/Train service resumes in

German railway company Deutsche Bahn has resumed rail services after a technological problem that halted train movements across the country for more than two hours on Tuesday evening.

Deutsche Bahn said in a statement after midnight that the problem that led to the disruption of traffic across the country had been resolved for the time being and that trains were gradually resuming services to their destinations.

Regional and suburban rail operators run by Deutsche Bahn also said in "X" that services were gradually resuming, but warned that major delays and cancellations were likely to continue for a few more hours.

"We managed to stabilize the situation with an emergency system. Now we have to determine the cause ," Deutsche Bahn CEO Evelyn Palla told German newspaper Bild. 

The technical problem occurred due to a defect in the Global System for Mobile Communications for Railways (GSM-R), which is used for international communication on the railway network.

Trains were stopped at stations and passengers were stranded across the country for the duration of the outage, which lasted nearly 2 and a half hours since it was first reported.

Railway company Deutsche Bahn apologized to passengers for the situation and gave taxi and hotel vouchers to those affected by the delays and disruptions. /CNA
