Rutte evaluates Trump's strategy towards Iran

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte praised President Donald Trump's actions in Iran as necessary to keep NATO allies safe and addressed the commander-in-chief's frustration with what he described as a lack of support from NATO allies.

"I think the president is doing exactly what is necessary, by degrading Iran's nuclear capability," Rutte said on Tuesday on "Special Report."

"Can you imagine if Iran got its hands on a nuclear weapon?" he continued. "That's an exporter of chaos. That's an exporter of terrorism. It would be devastating for the region. It would be devastating for the entire world."

Rutte said 500 US aircraft used Italian bases during Operation Epic Fury and Bucharest was forced to cut commercial air flights so US forces could guard tanker facilities at the city's airport.

He also said that allies are continuing to assist the US in protecting the Strait of Hormuz.

"Now you see major European allies pre-positioning their assets near the Strait, so that they are able to help, for example, when it comes to demining," Rutte said.

Rutte, who said he is "fully supportive" of Trump's Iran strategy, credited him with making NATO "stronger," making the US safer and encouraging allies to invest more in defense.

"When you look at the investment figures that NATO countries are now making in their defense, it is shocking," said the NATO secretary general.
