Wednesday's earthquake was the largest to hit Venezuela in more than a century, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey.

The largest earthquake ever recorded in the country occurred in 1900, when a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the northern coast of Venezuela, near the capital Caracas.

The epicenter of the earthquake was only a few hundred kilometers from the epicenter of yesterday evening's earthquake.

Wednesday's second quake was the largest, measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale. Meanwhile, the quake recorded just 40 seconds earlier, measuring 7.2, is ranked as the fourth largest in the country, right behind a 2018 quake.

At least 32 people have died and over 700 others have been injured. The death toll is expected to rise as the search for people trapped under the rubble continues.

The country's acting president, Delcy Rodriguez, declared a state of emergency and announced that the damage caused and buildings destroyed by the earthquakes were extensive. US experts have warned that the death toll could exceed 10,000. /CNA
