The latest data from the Statistical Institute for 2025 shows an alarming situation for the livestock sector. Apart from a very limited growth in cattle and beehives, almost all other categories are in free fall.

The most dramatic blow comes from the pig sector, where their number has fallen by 28.2% in one year, dropping from 104 thousand to 75 thousand heads. Small livestock is also suffering a severe blow, as the number of goats has fallen by 7.9%.

Sheep have also recorded a decline of 3.8%. The situation is also difficult in poultry, where the number of chickens has suffered a significant decrease of 8.3%. The equine sector has also shrunk by 3.2%.

This situation has also had an immediate impact on production, as egg production has fallen by 5.8%, to 837 million eggs. Milk production has decreased from 876,688 tons to 868,281 tons.
