Iran's Foreign Ministry described the statements of NATO chief Mark Rutte, who said that the United States had used several of the alliance's military bases in Europe in the war with Iran, as an "admission" of "complicity" in the conflict and demanded accountability.
Secretary General Mark Rutte's comments, which were in response to criticism from US President Donald Trump about NATO's lack of cooperation in Washington's military campaign against Tehran, are "an admission of the organization's complicity in carrying out military aggression against an independent state," the Iranian ministry said.
Rutte said that during the war, which began with the US and Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28, European NATO members cooperated with the US and 4,000 to 5,000 operational US military flights were carried out from European bases, including from Italy.
Italian officials rejected this claim, saying they had allowed the US to use the country's bases only for logistical and support flights, in line with bilateral commitments with Washington, and that no offensive operations had been carried out from Italian territory.
Some of the US's European allies, including Italy and Spain, openly opposed the war, while others, such as the UK, Germany and France, took a more cautious stance and avoided involvement in the conflict, an issue that greatly angered President Trump.
After the war began, the US and Iran reached a fragile ceasefire in April. Earlier this month, the sides signed a memorandum of understanding — the first such agreement between Washington and Tehran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
The memorandum provides for a 60-day period for the parties to reach a permanent peace agreement. The US has said it will not allow the Islamic Republic to have nuclear weapons. /REL
