Devastating earthquakes in Venezuela / Death toll rises

The death toll from devastating earthquakes in Venezuela has reached at least 164 people, while 971 others have been confirmed injured, Venezuela's acting president, Delcy Rodriguez, announced.

However, authorities have warned that the real death toll could be much higher, as many buildings have collapsed or sustained severe damage. Search and rescue teams are continuing operations in the affected areas.

According to Rodriguez, at least 30 aftershocks were recorded after the two main earthquakes.

In an interview with Venezuelan state broadcaster, she stated that she is cooperating with the United Nations to send rescue teams and with the International Monetary Fund to create an initial fund of $200 million for the reconstruction of the country.

Rodriguez also called on private companies to provide heavy machinery to assist in rescue operations.

She urged citizens to maintain calm and unity, as well as to stay in their homes if the structures are considered safe.

He also announced that at 7:00 p.m. local time, a national prayer will be held, attended by representatives of all religious faiths. /CNA
