Why is Central Europe unprepared for the approaching heatwave?

A severe heatwave is expected to sweep across Central Europe in the coming days, with temperatures in some places reaching 40°C. Meteorologists warn that countries in the region, which usually have cooler climates, are not prepared for such extreme conditions.

According to forecasts, Budapest could record temperatures of up to 40°C, Prague and Bratislava up to 39°C, while in some parts of Bulgaria the thermometer could reach 41°C. The region will also face tropical nights, where temperatures will not drop below 20°C, making it difficult for the body to recover from the heat.

Experts point out that many buildings in Central Europe are built for colder climates and do not have effective cooling systems. Limited use of air conditioning and inadequate infrastructure increase the risk to citizens, especially the elderly, children and people with health problems.

Authorities warn that extreme temperatures could put pressure on hospitals and emergency services, while schools and public institutions could be forced to change their hours or temporarily close. The heat is also expected to affect rail transport, the construction sector and agriculture.

Meanwhile, Western European countries, such as France and Spain, which have been facing record temperatures for days, have implemented numerous measures to mitigate the effects of the heat, including climate shelters, increasing green spaces and restrictions on outdoor work./
