Trump threatens Europe with 100% tax tariffs on US tech companies

United States President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 100% tariffs on imports from any European country that imposes or implements a digital services tax on American technology giants.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump accused several European countries of targeting American companies with discriminatory tax policies, stressing that any country that imposes such a tax will immediately face harsh trade measures.

"Any country that imposes such a tax will immediately face a 100% tariff on every good exported to the United States," Trump wrote.

The US president's statement comes at a time when several European countries are considering imposing or expanding taxes on digital services, which affect major companies such as Apple, Google, Meta and Amazon.

The United Kingdom has been implementing a 2% digital services tax since 2020, which imposes tax obligations on companies with high global revenues and significant activity in the British market. According to the British Treasury, this tax has generated over 800 million pounds in revenue during the fiscal year 2024–2025.

France, Italy and Spain have also imposed similar 3% taxes on large technology companies, while several other European Union countries are considering similar measures.

Trump's threat comes just days after the finalization of a new trade deal between the United States and the European Union, adding to uncertainty over transatlantic economic relations.

The US administration has not yet provided details on when the announced tariffs could come into effect, while European countries have not officially reacted to the US president's statement./ CNA
