Barcelona plans to triple tourist tax for cruise passengers

Barcelona authorities are proposing to almost triple the tourist tax for cruise ship passengers who stay in the city for less than 12 hours. If the initiative is approved by the Catalan Parliament, the fee would increase from 11 to 30 euros per day.

The increased rate will only apply to cruise ships that call at the port of Barcelona for a short period. It will not apply to itineraries that start or end in Barcelona, ??as such tourists typically stay longer in the city, using hotels, transportation and other services.

According to city authorities, the main purpose of the fee increase is not only to replenish the budget, but also to curb excessive cruise ship tourism.

Some politicians believe this will help define the place of cruise ship stops in Barcelona's tourism strategy.

Others propose limiting the total number of cruise ship passengers, but it is noted that implementing such a measure would be significantly more difficult.
