920 dead in Venezuela earthquakes / Search continues for survivors

The death toll from two powerful earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela has reached 920, with 3,360 people injured, according to local authorities. Rescue teams continue to search through the rubble, while dozens of families are still waiting for news of missing relatives.

The two earthquakes, which occurred within seconds of each other, caused major destruction in the capital Caracas and the coastal region of La Guaira, the area hardest hit by the disaster.

Hundreds of buildings, including hospitals, shopping malls and other public facilities, have been damaged or collapsed.

Authorities say many people are still trapped under the rubble, and the death toll is expected to rise. Dozens of survivors have been rescued so far, including three children, whose rescue has become a symbol of hope for the country.

Due to extensive damage to the health system, the injured are receiving treatment in makeshift medical centers. Doctors report a shortage of medicines and equipment, making it even more difficult to cope with the emergency.

Meanwhile, hundreds of search and rescue specialists from various countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, the Netherlands, Mexico and Switzerland, have arrived in Venezuela to assist local authorities. The US has also announced $150 million in humanitarian and logistical assistance.

According to authorities, over 200 aftershocks have been recorded so far, while emergency teams continue operations in the most affected areas.

The disaster has struck Venezuela at a difficult political and economic time, further worsening the humanitarian situation in the country./ CNA
