Mysterious incident in Beijing/ Plane crashes into building, footage of the event "disappears" within hours

A serious incident has been reported at the CITIC Tower (China Zun) in Beijing, where a small plane is suspected to have crashed into the city's tallest building on Friday afternoon.

According to reports, the single-engine plane hit the top of the 109-story building, causing windows to shatter and debris to fall onto the streets below. The pilot died at the scene, while at least 13 other people were injured, CNN reports.

Footage of the incident briefly circulated on social media within China, but was removed within hours, while authorities did not immediately publicly acknowledge the incident.

Later, state media confirmed that a small plane had crashed into the building and that an investigation had been launched into the accident.

The incident has raised serious questions about how such an aircraft managed to fly over Beijing, one of the world's most controlled cities for airspace, where even drones are strictly restricted.

The cause of the collision has not yet been confirmed, while Chinese authorities are investigating whether it was an accident or deliberate action. /CNA
