A quarter of a century since Milosevic's extradition/ In The Hague without

It has been 25 years since Slobodan Milosevic was extradited to The Hague Tribunal, where he was charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity during the conflicts in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo. Although he died in custody in 2006 without being sentenced by a final verdict, his figure continues to be the subject of rehabilitation efforts in Serbia.

According to Rel's analysis, the political elite that leads Serbia, headed by President Aleksandar Vu?i?, is perceived by analysts and the opposition as a continuation of the politics of the 1990s. The Socialist Party of Serbia, which was once led by Miloševi?, has become an integral part of governing coalitions since 2008, ensuring that his legacy remains active in the country's political life.

In the Serbian public sphere, there is often a tendency to minimize or deny the regime's crimes, while those convicted of war crimes are often welcomed with state honors upon their return from prison. Members of the Miloševi? family, who had fled to Russia, are gradually returning to the spotlight, with his nephew, Marko Miloševi?, now a member of the Serbian Parliament.

Experts believe that Serbia has never managed to make a clear and complete distancing from Milosevic's policies. A key moment in this process is considered to be 2008, when the Democratic Party signed a declaration of political reconciliation with the Socialists, in a way amnestiing past responsibilities for the sake of stability. Thus, while his supporters still see him as a defender of Serbian interests, the victims of his regime remain almost unrepresented in the current state narrative, leaving Serbian society in a state of constant polarization./ CNA
