Europe in "death wave"/ Record temperatures cause chaos and loss of

An extreme heat wave has swept across Europe, breaking temperature records and causing catastrophic consequences for public health and infrastructure. Germany recorded its highest temperature ever of 41.3°C in the city of Saarbrücken, while the United Kingdom set a provisional record of 37.1°C. Climate experts say Europe is the fastest-warming continent in the world, with temperatures twice the global average, and this heat wave is the worst ever recorded for the region.

The public health consequences are severe, with 327 possible heat-related deaths in Spain in five days and 55 drownings in France since the start of this wave. Due to the high risk, authorities have cancelled major public events such as the Solidays music festival in Paris and the Hamburg half marathon, while in the Netherlands, the Defqon.1 festival was cut short under a "code red" alert, causing unrest among attendees.

The situation has also affected vital sectors, with the Beznau nuclear power plant in Switzerland forced to disconnect two reactors from the grid after the water in the Aare River became too hot to cool them. Meanwhile, glaciers in Switzerland are facing accelerated melting that usually occurs in August, while in Spain, a major fire forced 16,000 residents to stay indoors. / CNA
