Anthropic's AI model/ US government allows limited use

The U.S. government has allowed Anthropic to reactivate its powerful artificial intelligence model, Mythos 5, but only to a select group of trusted partners, such as cybersecurity experts and critical infrastructure providers. The decision comes in a reversal of a government order in early June that had blocked the export and use of the company's models due to national security concerns.

The new license currently does not include the Fable model, which is considered a less powerful version than Mythos 5. Anthropic is currently in ongoing talks with US authorities with the aim of restoring access to this model for general use in the future.

The government's main concern stems from fears that advanced AI models, such as Mythos, could fall into the hands of malicious actors or hackers, who could use them to identify and exploit vulnerabilities in security systems at high speed. This case demonstrates the lack of a stable regulatory framework for artificial intelligence, while the technology is advancing at a rapid pace.

The relationship between Anthropic and the US government has been strained recently, after the company was previously labeled a supply chain risk due to disputes over military uses of its products. Anthropic is challenging this labeling through litigation, where it has so far scored an initial victory.
