Germany, Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary experience hottest days ever

Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary hit record temperatures of more than 40 degrees Celsius on Sunday, as a heatwave linked to hundreds of deaths in Western Europe spread east.

More than 191 million people in Europe faced temperatures of at least 35 degrees Celsius, with extreme heat warnings across the region.

Germany recorded a new record temperature of 41.7 degrees Celsius in Coschen, near the Polish border in eastern Brandenburg, according to preliminary data from the national weather service. This broke the previous record of 41.5 degrees Celsius set a day earlier in Drewitz.

In Gohrischheide, eastern Germany, a fire broke out in a forest contaminated with munitions from World War II, complicating the efforts of firefighters.

A major firefighting operation was also called off at a former ammunition disposal site near the village of Traisen in southwestern Germany.

Firefighters were forced to briefly stop after explosions were caused and a bomb disposal unit was brought to the scene, German news agency DPA reported.

About 650 people in Traisen were forced to leave their homes on Sunday as the fire continued to spread.

In Berlin, police sprayed water into the air to help residents and tourists calm down. German rail operator Deutsche Bahn advised against all non-essential travel.

Poland surpassed its all-time heat record, with temperatures reaching 40.5 degrees Celsius in S?ubice, on the Polish-German border, breaking a 105-year-old record of 40.2 degrees Celsius, set in 1921.

The Polish government's security agency sent out text messages urging people to "avoid the sun and strenuous activities," drink water and wear hats throughout the weekend. Many cities set up water curtains to help residents stay cool in the heat.

Hungary also broke its all-time record for this date, with 40.7 degrees Celsius reported in Budakalász, higher than 40.0 degrees Celsius on Saturday.

The Czech Republic also reported a new record temperature of 41.9 degrees Celsius in Doksany, confirmed by the hydrometeorological institute on Sunday morning. "Temperatures continue to rise, this is not the final maximum," it said in a statement.

In Slovakia, 39.3 degrees Celsius was reported in Mu?la, in the southwest of the country.

Denmark on Saturday recorded its highest temperature since records began in 1874, with 36.6 degrees Celsius north of Odense.

Meanwhile, France has begun counting deaths caused by the heatwave.

France's national public health agency said that between June 24 and 27, 1,000 additional deaths were recorded compared to the figures for previous months. These figures were temporary and were expected to rise significantly.

The most significant increase in deaths is linked to people dying at home, particularly in the Île-de-France region that includes Paris and its suburbs. Most deaths were among people over 65, but younger people were also affected.

"This serves as a reminder of the need for solidarity measures towards people who are isolated or who experience deep loneliness, including in highly urbanized areas," the health agency said in a statement.

Philippe Juvin, an emergency doctor and MP for the right-wing party Les Républicains, said the final death toll in France would be very high.

He said on Sunday that there are likely people still in their homes in comas, or who have died, who may not be discovered until next week.

Much of northern France was also hit by violent electrical storms and strong winds, which caused several injuries, while emergency services were called to help with fallen trees on roads and flooded homes.

Lightning in the Aisne region caused several fires, including one in Laon, where five people were injured. The storms caused power outages and more than 60,000 homes were left without power on Sunday morning.

A man died in Belgium when a tree fell on his vehicle outside Brussels, media said, as violent storms hit much of the country.
