With a totally illegal request that is not recognized by the Criminal Procedure Code, the mayor of Tirana, who is being held in prison on 13 serious criminal charges, has addressed the Supreme Court, requesting the acceleration of his trial.

"The request for acceleration is not based on an abstract interest in a speedy review, but on concrete and daily consequences on personal freedom, on the exercise of the mandate won by vote and on the functioning of local government in the Municipality of Tirana," the request states.

In fact, Veliaj is not in prison for fun, but because he, in his capacity as mayor, was caught during investigations, tampering with evidence and in his chair signing that the tax money of the citizens of Tirana would go to his wife and her family. "Any delay in the retrial is not, therefore, simply a procedural delay; it consumes the term of office itself and makes the consequence that the security measure has produced on the exercise of public office increasingly irreversible, as well as effectively unenforceable the decision of the Constitutional Court. Consequently, even a potentially positive decision of the Supreme Court, if issued after the actual term of office has been significantly consumed or is nearing its end, would risk remaining without practical effect, as it would not be able to realistically restore the lost period of exercise of the term, nor repair the institutional consequence created by the de facto inability of the Mayor to perform his function, nor the violation of the right of citizens and voters to be governed by the representative elected by them," the request continues.
