US strikes over 80 Iranian targets after attacks on tankers in Hormuz/ Tehran

The United States has launched a wave of air strikes on Iranian targets after three oil tankers were attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important shipping lanes for oil.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that more than 80 targets were hit, including over 60 small Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) naval vessels, as well as missile launch sites and command centers. According to the US military, the operation aimed to deter attacks on commercial shipping and ensure the safety of navigation in the strait.

Meanwhile, Iranian state media reported that the US strikes hit the areas of Qeshm Island, Bandar Abbas and Sirik, where several people were injured by shrapnel. Tehran has not claimed responsibility for the attacks on the three tankers that prompted the US response.

In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had fired missiles and drones at 85 US military targets in Bahrain and Kuwait, including a US Navy headquarters and an air base in Kuwait.

Earlier, Iran's deputy foreign minister described the US attacks as a violation of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding signed last month, warning that Tehran would take "decisive measures" to protect national interests.

In parallel, the US Treasury Department revoked a temporary waiver from sanctions on Iranian oil, a measure that was part of the last agreement between the two countries. The Iranian Foreign Ministry condemned the decision, calling it evidence of Washington's "bad faith and distrust".

Meanwhile, Qatar and Saudi Arabia accused Iran of attacks on their tankers while they were passing through or near the Strait of Hormuz. Doha said it held Tehran "fully responsible" for the attack on the Al-Rekayyat, while Riyadh said the Saudi tanker Wadyan was targeted.

Iran rejected the accusations, stating that ships that do not coordinate their movements with Iranian authorities or interfere with tracking systems risk collisions and hinder efforts to ensure safe transit through the strait.

At the same time, the UKMTO organization reported several other incidents in the area, where various tankers suffered damage after being hit by unknown projectiles, but managed to continue sailing towards their ports.

Despite the escalation of tensions, US officials have stated that negotiations with Iran will continue with the aim of reaching a final agreement. The memorandum of understanding reached last month provides for the extension of the ceasefire and cooperation between Iran, Oman and the Gulf countries on the future management of the Strait of Hormuz./ CNA
