State Department Report on Albania: SPAK, key role in prosecuting high-level

A new report on Albania, which comes as part of the publications by the US Department of State's Office of the Office of the Attorney General (OSAC), also focuses on the implementation of the law in the country.

The report shares high praise for the Special Structure Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK), which, as noted, prosecutes complex cases, including terrorism, high-level corruption, and organized crime.

“SPAK, which was established in 2019, prosecutes cases involving terrorism, high-level corruption, and organized crime. SPAK prosecutes complex cases and cooperates directly with key international law enforcement and prosecution entities. District prosecutors’ offices across the country prosecute the remaining cases that do not fall under SPAK’s limited jurisdiction. SPAK and other law enforcement services in Albania cooperate extensively with INTERPOL and other international law enforcement bodies,” the report states.

According to the report, corruption and obstacles in information sharing between government agencies, insufficient coordination within agencies, and a still-developing judicial system continue to hinder law enforcement efforts in Albania./CNA
