An incident this Monday involving MP and leader of the Opportunity Party, Agron Shehaj, has caused a stir and appears to be taking on new political dimensions.
It concerns the theft from the Assembly offices of a confidential document of the draft law on the Direct Loan Agreement with the US, which was approved this afternoon with only majority votes.
The published footage shows how Shehaj ran away after the act, while the Parliament employee who was following him fell down the stairs.
After the event, Shehaj did not share any statement or any details regarding the content of the agreement, which was considered secret, and in such cases, MPs also sign a confidentiality agreement with the Parliament.
Looking back in time, a similar situation was noted in February of this year, when 5 opposition MPs, including Shehaj, signed a confidentiality agreement for the file filed in the Assembly by SPAK regarding the case against former Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku.
"The final position of the 5 opposition members in the Immunity Council
Finally, the 5 deputies of the Immunity Council, representatives of the opposition, in support of Articles 73, 95, 103 of the Constitution, Articles 260, 288, 289 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, as well as Articles 13 and 118 of the Rules of Procedure of the Assembly;
RECOMMEND:
The deputies in the plenary session of the Assembly of the Republic of Albania vote in favor, for the approval of the request no. 43019Prot., dated 16.12.2025 of the Special Prosecution Office Against Corruption and Organized Crime, deciding: "Granting authorization by the Assembly of the Republic of Albania, for the arrest/deprivation of liberty through the replacement of the security measure from that of "Prohibition of leaving the country" provided for by article 233 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and "Suspension of the exercise of a public duty or service", provided for by article 242 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, to that of arrest in prison/at home, for Ms. Belinda BALLUKU", who exercises the functions of deputy, minister and deputy prime minister, within the framework of criminal proceedings no. 136 of 2025, where she was taken as a defendant and a person under investigation, because she is suspected of having repeatedly committed the criminal offense: "Violation of equality of participants in tenders or public auctions", committed in collaboration, provided for by articles 258/2 and 25 of the Criminal Code," their request stated.
At the time, Shehaj widely shared the position that this dossier should be published in detail by the opposition, which he reiterated through his public and media statements.
While today, just a few months after the same incident, it seems that Shehaj has a different stance, simply because he himself was caught stealing the document.
The lack of coherence among MPs is not unusual in Albanian politics, but in Shehaj's case it seems like a more than deserved "crucifixion" ./CNA
