Road safety in Albania/DASH report: Frequent accidents, problem of

Road safety, according to the latest report compiled by the US Department of State's OSAC structure, is one of the elements that requires special attention in Albania.

According to the report, driving in Albania can be difficult, as travelers regularly encounter unsafe drivers across the country and disobedience to traffic laws is widespread. Road accidents are frequent and repeatedly result in serious injury or death.

The report also focuses on the condition of roads in Albania, assessing that the main roads between cities are usually paved highways. Many smaller roads in villages or neighborhoods are mainly dirt and rocky and are in poor condition. In winter, roads in the mountains in northern Albania can be snowy and icy. Flash floods can occur at any time, opening deep and wide potholes, especially in suburban areas.

"Driving at night is dangerous, with roads that are poorly lit. Avoid traveling between cities at night due to the risk of car accidents," the report continues.

The report also estimates that fuel and repair services are common in populated areas, but there is no official roadside assistance.

The report also raises concerns that emergency response services are inadequate, with first responders having limited medical training and equipment, and accident victims often having to be transported to the nearest hospital by a passerby. /CNA
