An extraordinary collection of wines once owned by the Georgian-born Soviet leader Josef Stalin has been opened for the first time this week.
The Georgian government, which has taken over the extraordinary warehouse in Tbilisi, plans to auction off approximately 40,000 French and Georgian varieties. Some bottles in the collection date back to the early 19th century.

Proceeds from the sale are intended to establish a new summer education school in Georgia.
Stalin was an avid drinker and wine collector, and his collection includes wine from the most famous Bordeaux estates that were once owned by Tsar Alexander III of Russia and his son Nicholas II.

The Soviets seized the Romanov Imperial collection after the Russian Revolution of 1917 and Stalin became the custodian, slowly adding his favorite Georgian varieties. /CNA
