The US asks NASA to create a time standard for the Moon

The White House has announced that it has directed the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to create a time standard for the Moon and other celestial bodies, as governments and private companies intensify the space race.

With the United States aiming to establish international norms beyond Earth orbit, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) has directed NASA to formulate a plan by the end of 2026 for the standard called Koha Coordinated Lunar.

"As NASA, private companies and other space agencies around the world launch missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond, it is important to establish celestial timing standards for safety and accuracy," said OSTP Deputy Director Steve Welby. through a statement.

He pointed out that "time passes differently" depending on one's position in space, citing an example of how time seems to pass more slowly where gravity is stronger, such as near celestial bodies.

"A consistent definition of time among space operators is essential for successful space situational awareness, navigation and communication capabilities," Welby said.

The goal, the White House said, of Lunar Coordinated Time, or LTC, is to align it with Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which is currently the main time standard used around the world to adjust time on Earth.

The White House has asked NASA to work with the Departments of Commerce, Defense, Transportation and the U.S. Department of State to create a strategy to create a timing standard that would improve navigation and other operations for individual missions. in a space zone between the Earth and the Moon.

The US is aiming to return to the Moon in 2026, after the Apollo 17 mission made the first human landing on this planet in 1972./ REL
