Rare phenomenon/ Brightest comet to pass by Earth for first time in 71 years

We may soon witness one of the brightest comets periodically pass by Earth for the first time in 71 years.

Experts say comet 12P/Pons-Brooks is currently approaching Earth. For most of us, it will be the only time in our lives that we will be able to see it.

According to astrophysicists, the comet is expected to reach its closest point to the Sun on April 21 and closest to Earth on June 2, "Euronews" writes.

The Virtual Telescope Project, an online service provided by the Bellatrix Astronomical Observatory in Italy, has released images of the comet taken from the Tuscan town of Manchiano. 

"Right now, a very beautiful comet is passing by. It's comet 12P/Pons-Brooks," said Gianluca Masi, director of the Virtual Telescope project.

"This comet is called periodic. It simply means that it orbits the Sun, only periodically entering the interior of the Solar System to visit its 'king,' the Sun. After each period, in this case, every 71 years, it returns to its perihelion," added Massi./ CNA
