The incredible story of the Dutchman/ 40 years with a gifted heart

Bert Janssen, 57, from the Netherlands, survived for almost 40 years with a donated heart he received at Harefield Hospital in Uckbridge, north-west London, in the 1980s, making him the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest transplant of the heart in a patient. 

The father-of-two and a pilot said it was an "honour" to achieve the record, but that he is still grateful for the "incredible gift" he received from the donor, the BBC reports . 

"I never imagined I would make it this far," Jensen said, adding that he has set a benchmark for others who now have proof that it is possible to live long with a donor heart.

He was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a disease that affects the heart's ability to pump blood around the body, when he was 17. 

His operation was the 107th transplant at Harefield Hospital./ CNA
