For those who continue to repeat that SPAK and GJKKO are "repressive" and that they never take human circumstances into account, it is worth remembering some facts.

A 34-year-old woman was arrested today in Rinas to serve a sentence of only 2 months in prison for domestic violence. She had three minor children with her. A baby only 7 months old and two other children aged 2 and 4. According to information, the woman asked for the children to stay with her, because she had no one to leave them with. However, the sentence was carried out.

Meanwhile, in the case of Ajola Xoxa, the opposite happened. Initially, no arrest was made in prison, taking into account the fact that she was the mother of a 5-year-old child. Later, after her second pregnancy, the security measure was lifted completely.

The contrast is obvious.

In one case, a mother with three very young children, including a 7-month-old baby, was sent to serve her sentence. In another, family circumstances were considered sufficient to initially avoid imprisonment and then to completely lift the security measure.

Maybe Ajola Xoxa was treated this way because she is Ajola Xoxa. Maybe this other mother is facing harsher treatment because she is an ordinary citizen. Maybe.

But this is precisely where the question arises that should concern every citizen.

Is the law being applied equally to everyone?

The law should not have names. It should not be more lenient for those with power, influence, or public exposure and more harsh for those no one knows. Equality before the law is not a slogan, but a constitutional principle.

And the paradox becomes even greater when you remember that the criminal case against Ajola Xoxa and Erion Veliaj has not yet entered trial for about a year, due to repeated delays and procedural obstacles, created precisely by Ajola Xoxa and her husband Erion Veliaj.

While another mother is immediately escorted to serve a 2-month sentence for a criminal offense with no public interest, in the case of the mayor of Tirana, exactly the opposite happens.

A process of high public interest continues to not start yet. So, unlike this young mother who will spend tonight without sleep in a prison environment, Ajola Xoxa and Erion Veliaj are making it impossible for the court to judge and make a decision. This is what feeds the perception of different standards and undermines public trust in justice./ CNA
