Bali, Indonesia is one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world. The streets resound with the sound of motorbikes and music playing in cafes and bars.

But on one day a year, the entire island falls silent. This is Nyepi, the Balinese New Year.

Unlike many other cultures, Balinese Hindus do not mark the new year with fireworks, parties or drinking.

Instead they remain silent. For a 24-hour period, starting at 6 a.m., Balinese Hindus fast, meditate, turn off electricity and stay at home with their families. Local security officers, called pecalang, patrol the streets to make sure no one goes outside. There are no cars on the road except for the occasional ambulance. The whole island stops its activity.

Regardless of their personal beliefs, everyone who visits the island on this day will be touched by the holiday. The airport and all tourist attractions are closed, and hotels do not check anyone in or out during this period.

What is Nyepi and what does it represent?

The Balinese calendar is 210 days, and Nyepi falls on the day after the new moon of the 10th lunar month - this year, March 11.

The day before Nyepi is Ngrupuk, when giant effigies of monsters called ogoh ogoh, representing evil spirits, are paraded by local children.

"From a religious and philosophical point of view, Nyepi is meant to be a day of self-introspection to reflect on the values ??of humanity, love, patience and kindness that should be inside us for the rest of our lives," says Professor Wayan./ CNA
