The world's largest airport will be built in the desert

Al Maktoum International Airport

Just over 10 years ago, in October 2013, a Wizz Air A320 arriving from Budapest made headlines by becoming the first commercial passenger flight to ever land at Al Maktoum International Airport, also known as Dubai World Central".

This airport about 20 miles southwest of downtown Dubai was designed to become, in the not-so-distant future, the largest and busiest in the world. 

The vision was and still is for a futuristic megacenter, ensuring that the Emirate's role as a key node of the global economy does not run into capacity problems anytime soon,  CNN writes. 

Dubai Airports, the airport authority that manages both Dubai International (DXB) and the new airport, promises that when Al Maktoum International is completed, it will be able to handle more than 160 million passengers a year, as and 12 million tons of goods.

To put that in perspective, that's nearly 63 million more passengers than the world's current busiest airport./ CNA
